Statement of Purpose
 
I look forward to pursuing a Master in Management Information Systems at the University of Arizona to enhance my analytical skills in conducting customer segmentation and customer targeting. I have a BBA degree in Management with three years' experience as a system analyst in financial services. When I was working for I Company on an online retail banking system project, I acquired hands-on experience in project management and developed my banking domain knowledge, specifically that related to credit cards. My current job as a system analyst at S Company has allowed me to gain more experience in SQL database coding, and I sharpened my technical skills in business analytics. In a short-term project I did at S Company whose purpose was to improve business operations, I analyzed insurance policy data to identify characteristics of specific policyholder groups. This data was used to support business decision-making. I observed that the volume of data being captured by companies today is staggering, but the information is poor. My career goal is to work as a data analyst for insurance companies, leveraging big data analysis and interpretation techniques to anticipate customers' insurance needs and increase sales by providing personalized customer services. I would like to further acquire predictive analytics techniques and undergo training in mining business intelligence. This is why I am applying to your program.
 
During my undergraduate studies, I took a course on knowledge discovery and data mining. My group and I worked on a course project to discover patterns in selected data and extract useful information. We collected statistical data about the National Basketball Association and used a clustering technique to group similar teams. I was put in charge of performing web scraping and transforming the website-only data into comma-separated values (CSV) files. We then loaded these files into the Weka tool for data preprocessing and clustering. Finally, we found recurring patterns that revealed a strong correlation between a game's result and the total points scored by each team. We could predict the outcome of a game with a high level of accuracy.
 
My experience working on an online retail banking system project played a key role in developing my requirements analysis techniques and project management capability. I was a business system analyst working for I Company. My job responsibilities included designing and adding new functions to the existing system. To deliver a better customer experience, for instance, I collaborated with the client's business development team to implement a credit card bill payment function on the bank's mobile banking app to offer the bank's customers more payment options. With this service, they would not have to go through with the inconvenience of paying their bills offline at an ATM. In the process of designing this function, I consulted with clients to gather requirements and presented my ideas using prototypes. After finalizing the requirements, I wrote specifications for developers and testers to follow. To ensure on-time project delivery, I used task management software during the execution phase. The project was successfully completed within the deadline.
 
By participating in a project on managing insurance premium collection at S Company, I improved my SQL skills and gained extensive experience in data analysis and data interpretation. As an IT system analyst, I created SQL statements to get desired data from multiple tables and encoded them as visual objects for data visualization. The graph displayed the relation among policyholder, channel of premium payment and related information for each individual customer. With my findings, I was able to derive insights about what types of customers were more likely to change the payment channel from paying the premium through an insurance agent to paying the premium directly to an insurance firm. Then I collaborated with colleagues to add an incentive plan to the system. Agents were motivated to persuade customers to pay the premium directly to the insurer. In this experience, I witnessed how data analytics could diagnose a particular business problem and benefit the business exponentially. I hope to pursue further studies to incorporate data analytics into decision-making processes to support business processes.
 
The MIS courses at the University of Arizona are comprehensive and can help me prepare for a career in information technology. For instance, I seek to strengthen my software skills to increase my competitiveness in the job market, and I am most interested in learning about processing and extracting knowledge from big data repositories with the Hadoop software on the Big Data Analytics course and the Big Data Technologies course. Also, your curriculum is market-oriented which can help me land an internship in the financial services industry as a data analyst. I hope to participate in improving customers' digital experience using big data. With the training this program offers, I am confident that I will succeed in acquiring a data analyst position upon graduation.
